FeedbackDisplace

A feedback loop with a displace stage inside it: opacity, crossfade, filter size, displacement driven by a built-in noise or a second input, a per-pass transform, reset and a dry/wet mix. An alternative for the Feedback TOP.

Where it appears

Read off the registry hosts in the component, so this is where the tool puts itself in a default install; every one of these can be reordered or hidden from Hub.

What it is

A Feedback TOP on its own gives you the loop, and the rest is always the same handful of operators around it. FeedbackDisplace is that handful in one node: the loop, a composite with an opacity, a blur, a displace stage that warps every pass by an animated noise or by whatever you wire into the second input, a transform applied per pass for drift, zoom and spin, a reset, and a dry/wet mix against the input. Trails, smears, liquid echoes and infinite zooms come straight from the parameters, with the chain left as it is.

It is the alternative for the Feedback TOP: create a Feedback TOP with the alternatives shortcut held and FeedbackDisplace is offered in its place, wired into the same spot. It is also a member of the FNS operator family: pick it from the FNS tab of the OP Create dialog and it lands as one node.

Inputs and output

  • in1 (TOP): the image fed into the loop.
  • in_displace (TOP): optional; a displacement map that replaces the built-in noise.
  • out1 (TOP): the loop's output, mixed with the input by Dry / Wet Mix.

Parameters

Feedback

ControlType / defaultWhat it does
OperationOperand menuMultiply How each pass of the feedback is composited over the input.
Options: Add, Atop, Average, Brightest, Burn Color, Burn Linear, Chroma Difference, Color and 38 more
OpacityOpacity number0.9 How much of the previous frame survives each pass: higher values leave longer trails.
CrossCross number0 Crossfades between the fresh input (0) and the feedback loop (1).
Filter SizeSize number1 Blur on the loop each pass, in pixels.
Aspect CorrectAspectcorrect on / offon Keep the displacement square on non-square images.
Displace WeightDisplaceweight xyzw0 How far the displacement pushes the image, per axis.
Source MidpointMidpoint xyzw0.5 The displacement value that means no movement; the default 0.5 centres it.
UV WeightUvweight number1 Blend of the displacement into the image coordinates: 0 leaves them untouched.
Displace PeriodPeriod number1 Scale of the built-in noise that drives the displacement: larger periods give broader shapes.
Displace AmplitudeAmp number0 Strength of the built-in noise that drives the displacement.
Displace SpeedDisplacespeed number0 How fast the built-in noise moves.
TT xyzw0 Translate applied to the loop each pass.
RotateRotate xyzw0 Rotation applied to the loop each pass, in degrees.
ScaleS xyzw1 Scale applied to the loop each pass: a little above 1 zooms the trails outward.
ResetReset momentaryoff Clear the feedback loop while held.
Dry / Wet MixDrywet number1 Mixes the effect with the input: 0 is the input alone, 1 the full effect.
